| Are
there non-smoking areas? Nearly all ships that visit the US have smoking and non-smoking tables or non-smoking sections in the dining rooms and lounges. However some foreign ships that do not visit the US may not enforce these non-smoking rules. If smoking is an issue, have your travel agent check it out. Can we celebrate a "special" day? Absolutely! Nearly all ships will even treat you to a complimentary cake and a chorus of "Happy Whatever" to honor the occasion; these cakes and the songs are FREE. Your birthday or anniversary can be more festive with champagne, canapes and flowers. You can even arrange for a special private party. See the Special Occasions section of the cruise brochures to learn more about the special on board packages you can purchase. Can we stay in touch
with the outside? Quite easily. Most cruise ships have a limited daily newsletter with news, headlines, selected stock quotes via UPI and sports scores. (Big screen ESPN in more and more sports lounges.) Most staterooms are equipped with televisions and direct dial telephones for your convenience. And, you can make phone calls from most ports. In addition most ships have fax capabilities and the newer ships offer Internet access and e-mail capabilities to guests, all at a cost of course. The tipping rules vary from cruise line to cruise line. On the less expensive cruises, tipping is usually expected. Some cruise lines state a "tipping not required" policy. You are free, however, to extend monetary recognition if you wish; it's entirely up to you. However some upscale lines prohibit tipping, to the extent that employees can be fired if they accept the tip. Check out the tipping policy with your travel agent before you leave home. |
